James Fowler

JAMES H. FOWLER is an internationally recognized political scientist who specializes in the study of social networks, human cooperation, and political participation. His work bridges the social and natural sciences (he was recently profiled in the highly prestigious journal Nature), and it is frequently covered by the media. This year alone, Scientific American has reported on his work three times for three very different and highly creative projects on egalitarianism, obesity, and the genetic basis of political behavior. And his work has been covered by numerous other media outlets over the last four years, including the Washington Post, U.S. News and World Report, the Economist, NPR, and the BBC.

Fowler is currently an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. He earned a BS from Harvard in 1992, a MA from Yale in 1997, and a PhD from Harvard in 2003. Dr. Fowler is a rising star in his profession, recently earning tenure after just 2 and a half years (the norm is 6-7 years). In this short time, Fowler has published 28 scientific articles, chapters, and academic books, and has received several teaching awards. He was also a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador from 1992 to 1994, where he built water systems for small villages in the Andes.
