MICHAEL MCCULLOUGH is a professor of psychology and Cooper Fellow at the University of Miami, where he directs the Evolution and Human Behavior Laboratory. McCullough is interested in applying concepts from evolutionary biology and cognitive science to better understand human psychology and social behavior. His research has addressed a broad range of topics, including cooperation, forgiveness, gratitude, religion, self-control, and the behavioral effects of oxytocin.
McCullough’s research on these topics has been published in some of the highest-visibility journals in the social and behavioral sciences, including Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Psychological Bulletin, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Evolution and Human Behavior. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He is the author of Beyond Revenge: The Evolution of the Forgiveness Instinct and The Kindness of Strangers: How a Selfish Ape Invented a New Moral Code.
